Established 1826, the RNLI took over the service in 1853. Lyme Regis lifeboat station closed in 1932 when cover was provided by motor lifeboats at Weymouth and Exmouth, but was re-opened in 1967 with the establishment of an inshore lifeboat.

Construction began in November 1996 of a new B class boathouse on the Cobb and was completed in July 1997. An Atlantic 75 lifeboat was placed on service on 29 September 1997.
