The station was established in1875 at the request of the local residents as a result of the wreck of the Brig Wild Wave on 23 January 1875. The name Dyke has long been associated with the lifeboat service at Swanage and since 1889 there have been very few occasions when the lifeboat has gone to sea without at least one member of the Dyke family on board. In 1928 a motor lifeboat was first sent to station.
The souvenir shop can be found in Station Road.
